AZ BOYS: Brophy Prep Downs Chandler in Emotional Opener
March 10th, 2010
Senior attackman Adam Fishman registered a game-high five points on four goals and one assist to lead Brophy Prep to an emotional, 10-6 victory over Chandler in an Arizona Youth Lacrosse League Division I game Tuesday night.
Sophomore middie Brock Ghelfi added four points on a goal and three assists, senior attackman Kevin Murney scored twice and junior attackman Andrew Fennessy had a goal and an assist to help the Broncos (1-0) win their season opener.
In defeat, junior middie Brandon Moranz scored a team-high two goals, and sophomore attackman Sean LaFlam pitched in a goal and an assist for Chandler, which fell to 1-1.
Defensively, senior goalie Brian LaFlam saved 18 shots.
Brophy Prep, which was playing its first game since senior attackman Robby Mayasich was tragically killed after being hit by a car, came out in warm-ups with all its players wearing shirts with the No. 8 and the phrase, “We are one,” on them. Mayasich was to be No. 8 this season.
When the game started, the Broncos came out inspired and stormed out to a 6-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. Brophy Prep led 7-3 at halftime and 9-5 at the end of the third quarter.
The Wolves pulled one back in the opening minute of the fourth quarter when senior attackman Andrew Muscara scored to make it 9-6 with 11:12 to play. But after more than seven scoreless minutes, Fennesy scored off a feed from Fishman to put Brophy Prep ahead, 10-6.
“They definitely came out firing, and we weren’t used to that pace of play,” Chandler head coach Dave Henning said. “It took us a quarter to adjust.”
