BOISE, Idaho -- Senior attackman Teddy Hicks scored the game-winning goal with 2:59 remaining in regulation to lift Boise State to a 12-11 upset victory over Montana in an MCLA Division I game Saturday afternoon.
Hicks received a pass left of the crease from sophomore middie Jake Christensen and buried a shot to put the Broncos ahead. Boise State then held on during the final three minutes to snap a seven-game losing streak that dates back to last season.
Hicks finished with four goals, Christensen registered five points on a goal and four assists and junior attackman Chase Hanchett added four points on three goals and one assist.
Freshman attackman Jeremy Bradburn scored two goals and dished one assist, and freshman middie Ryan Lindsay added a goal to help Boise State (1-4) pick up its first win this season.
Montana led 4-1 at the end of the first quarter, and Boise State trailed for most of the game before finally drawing level with about seven minutes to play in regulation.
“This win feels great,” Hicks said. “We knew what we had to do, and we did it. I’m proud of my team. We all played the best we could.”
In a losing effort, senior attackman Will Freihofer registered a game-high six points on five goals and one assist, sophomore attackman Jeremy Brown added five points on four goals and an assist and freshman middie Theo Munsell scored one goal and dished two assists for the Montana (5-4), which lost its second straight.
Sophomore middie Tucker Sargent added one goal, and sophomore long-stick middie Scott Krueger dished an assist for the Grizzlies.
Montana led 10-8 in the fourth quarter before Hanchett started a three-goal run that put Boise State in front. Hicks capped the run when he scored off a ground ball in front of the crease to give the Broncos an 11-10 lead with 5:03 left in regulation.
Freihofer tied the game when he intercepted a clearing pass and scored from just in front of the crease with 4:31 to play.
But Boise State answered when Christensen crossed midfield on a fast break, dodged two defenders and drew the goalie to the right side, then dished to Hicks, who scored on an open net from the left.
“We’re definitely disappointed after the game,” Brown said. “We came off a ranked win in Colorado and expected to win here, but Boise State played hard for the win.”
