MINN BOYS: Blake Wins 2nd Straight Section 5 Championship
May 29th, 2009
Senior attackman Dixon Pettingill scored a game-high four goals to lead fourth-seeded Blake to a decisive, 9-1 victory over third-seeded Edina in the Minnesota State High School League Section 5 championship game Thursday night at Breck.
Junior attackman Rob Barnhart added three points on two goals and one assist, and sophomore attackman George Ordway had three points on a goal and two assists to help the defending state champion Bears (10-5) win their second straight Section 5 title.
With the victory, Blake advanced to the state semifinals and now awaits its seeding. Minnetonka will almost certainly be the No. 1 seed, but Nos. 2, 3 and 4 are up in the air between Eastview, Blake and unbeaten Centennial.
The Minnesota state semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, at Hopkins High School.
“We’ll play anybody,” Blake head coach Rob Horn said. “We don’t care what our seed is. We feel we should be two or three. Section 5 is called the ‘section of death’ for a reason. We know we lost a close game to Minnetonka and we lost a close game to Eastview, but this isn’t the same team that lost those games.”
On Thursday, junior middie Kolten Fischer and sophomore middie Reed Mandel each had a goal to round out the scoring for Blake, which dominated from start to finish.
Defensively, junior goalie Lowell Fluke saved eight shots.
Blake led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter, 4-0 at halftime and 8-0 at the end of the third quarter before taking a 9-0 lead in the fourth.
Edina, which finished the season 11-4, didn’t score until senior middie Andy Dobolis ended the shutout with 2:47 remaining in regulation.
“We’re ecstatic to be back in the state tournament,” Horn said. “This is a team that everybody in the state has written off all year long. We felt slighted by our section seeding, and we knew we were going to have to work for this one. And we did. We worked hard.”

Oh my goodness! an amazing
