MINN GIRLS: Blake School Knocks off Lakeville to Reach Final
June 9th, 2010
Eighth-grade middie Lydia Sutton scored four goals and junior middie Abbie Lund had three to lead Blake School to a 13-6 victory over Lakeville on Tuesday night in a Minnesota State High School League semifinal.
Sophomore middie Meghan Bauer and junior middie Hillary Crowe both added two goals and two assists for the Bears (14-3), who advanced to Wednesday’s state final against Eden Prairie, WSL’s No. 10 team. Eden Prairie has won five of the last six Minnesota championships. Blake School won the other (in 2008).
Blake School head coach Laura Mark credited her defense – particularly sophomore Morgan Oie – for its standout play Tuesday night.
“I thought our defense played extremely well today – most especially in our settled defense, but even our attack riding the ball and when our goalie came up with saves,” Mark said.
The Bears now will face an Eden Prairie team that beat them 15-6 on May 21.
“I think we have to be more aggressive on draw controls, and I think we have to make sure defensively that we’re tight on our marks,” Mark said, when asked what her team had to do better this time against Eden Prairie. “They have a lot of scoring threats out there, and we have to make sure we don’t let anyone open in front of the net. And we have to make our opportunities count.”
Lakeville (15-2) saw its 13-game winning streak and its best playoff run in program history come to an end. The Panthers got three goals from senior attack Olivia Perry and two from senior middie Danica Cutshall.
“I think they played with a lot of heart tonight,” Lakeville head coach Kate Leavell said. “I think they worked really hard. We’re struggling with some injuries, and I think they just had a hard time getting down the field and using their speed.”
