BOISE, Idaho – Senior attack Amanda Smith registered a game-high six points on five goals and one assist to lead unbeaten Bishop Kelly to a 13-9 victory over Eagle in the Treasure Valley Lacrosse League championship game Tuesday night at Bishop Kelly High School.
Senior middie Cassie Brunelle scored four goals and dished one assist, senior middie Mariah Adcox added four points on a goal and three assists and senior middie Elise Talboy had a goal and an assist to help the Knights (19-0) win their 19th straight.
Bishop Kelly won its first championship since 2006 and ended Eagle's two-year run at the top.
“We've been working toward this goal all season,” Brunelle said. “This is a huge step forward. We've kept it light and fun all year, but being here is definitely rewarding. This has been amazing.”
Senior middie Lindsi Luken and sophomore middie Katie O'Neill each added a goal, and junior middie Sarah Hassell dished an assist for Bishop Kelly, which beat Eagle for the third time this season.
“It's tough to see these girls go,” Bishop Kelly head coach JoJo Brunelle said. “This is my team. I've been coaching a lot of these girls since 8th grade in both lacrosse and basketball.”
In defeat, junior middie Erica Owen registered a team-high five points on four goals and one assist, sophomore attack Jenna Friesz scored two goals and dished an assist and sophomore middie Becca Seevers had two goals for the Mustangs, who finished the season 13-5.
Freshman middie Abby Ewing added a goal to round out the offense for Eagle.
“We finished in second during a building year for us,” Eagle head coach Murray Owen said. “That shows the potential of this team. We've only got one graduating senior on our young squad. We'll be coming back strong next year.”
With Bishop Kelly leading 8-7 in the second half, the Knights broke the game open with a 5-1 run, which was capped by Smith, who made it 13-8 with 5:51 to play.
Erica Owen scored the final goal for Eagle with 3:48 remaining on a free-position goal.
“This is my first undefeated season,” Smith said. “ I've been wanting this since freshman year. I'm stoked at the experience. This is awesome.”
