NEV BOYS: Bishop Gorman Wins 2nd Straight SNLA DII Title
May 22nd, 2010
Senior attackman Chase Kolebuck scored a team-high four goals to lead top-seeded Bishop Gorman to a 13-12 victory over second-seeded Green Valley in the Southern Nevada Lacrosse Association Division II championship game Friday.
Freshman middie Chase Pollick added four points on three goals and an assist, junior middie Brent Martelli scored three goals and senior attackman Kyler Pollick had three points on a goal and two assists to help the Gaels (12-3) win their second straight Division II title.
Bishop Gorman won despite missing its head coach, Ian Devlin, who is in the hospital after having an appendectomy.
Green Valley, which is in its first year as a varsity program, finished the season 11-5.
Junior middie Nick Eisenberg and junior attackman Kris Kalkowski each had a goal to round out the offense for Bishop Gorman.
Defensively, sophomore goalie Cian O’Donnell saved 11 shots, and he came up huge in the dying seconds to prevent overtime.
The game was tied, 4-4, at the end of the first quarter, Bishop Gorman led 7-6 at halftime and the Gaels led 9-7 at the end of the third quarter.
Eisenberg’s only goal gave Bishop Gorman a 13-10 lead with just 2:04 remaining, but the Gators fought right down to the final seconds.
Green Valley scored back-to-back goals with 1:29 and 1:04 to play to cut the deficit to a goal, and the Gators went on a man-up opportunity with 29 seconds to play. But with a sure-fire chance to tie it, Green Valley couldn’t put one past O’Donnell in the end, who made a point-blank save with four seconds left.
“A lot of it has to do with our goalie,” said acting head coach Jon Cohen, who filled in for Devlin with defensive coordinator Joe Unitas. “He hurt his shoulder in the second quarter, and then had eight or nine saves in the second half.
“I’m definitely proud of the boys for listening to myself and Joe Unitas the last couple days with Ian being in the hospital and putting into action our game plan with all the distractions.”
