UT BOYS: Bingham, Bountiful Both Win Season Openers
March 9th, 2010
Sophomore middie Chris Severson scored a team-high four goals to lead Bingham to a hard-fought, 9-6 win over Orem in a Utah High School Lacrosse League Division I game Monday afternoon.
Sophomore middie Jordan Shumway added three points on two goals and an assist, and senior middie Cole Christensen scored a pair of goals to help the Miners (1-0) win their season opener. Senior middie Ryker Hall had a goal to round out the offense for Bingham.
Orem (0-1) lost its season opener, but it didn’t go down without a fight.
The game was tied, 2-2, at the end of the first quarter, 3-3 at halftime, and Bingham led 5-4 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth, Orem twice came back to draw even, first at 5-5 and against at 6-6. However, Bingham had just a little too much in the end.
Shumway scored the go-ahead goal with 8:03 remaining to put the Miners up 7-6, Hall made it 8-6 with 7:06 to play and Severson added one more for insurance with 1:25 left.
BOUNTIFUL 20, WOODS CROSS 2
The two-time defending champs rolled out an unceremonious welcome mat for one of the state’s newest Division I teams.
Senior attackman Jon Yates scored a game-high eight goals, and senior attackman Jason Andre had eight points on four goals and four assists, as the Braves (1-0) rolled to an easy season-opening win.
Woods Cross (0-1) lost its first game in Division I.
Bountiful led 6-1 at the end of the first quarter, 9-1 at halftime and 14-2 going into the final 12 minutes.
“I was happy with the performance,” Bountiful head coach Marty Wescott said. “We hustled on ground balls, we did well on face-offs and we just moved the ball well on offense.”
