Senior attackman Bailey Dodds scored five goals and had two assists, senior attackman Ryan Butts had two goals and four assists and sophomore attackman Christian Horn had four goals to lead No. 24 Benilde-St. Margaret’s to a 19-4 victory over Wayzata on Thursday night in a Minnesota State High School League Boys Lacrosse state semifinal at Mounds View High.

With the victory, Benilde-St. Margaret’s improved to 15-1 and advanced to Friday night’s state championship game against Totino-Grace, which edged Eagan in the other semifinal, 4-3. The Red Knights have won four straight since their lone loss of the season (a one-goal loss to Blake School that they avenged about two weeks later), and during that stretch they’ve out-scored their opponents 62-20.

“We really used that game we lost as motivation for the games that were coming up,” Benilde-St. Margaret’s head coach Colin Mulcahy said. “The guys took it hard. They took it really hard, and they used it as motivation for what they really wanted to do this year.”

Thursday, Benilde-St. Margaret’s scored in the first minute and never trailed. The Red Knights led 5-1 after one quarter, 12-2 at the half and 18-3 after three quarters.

“We came out strong right from the start of the game,” Mulcahy said. “We got the first couple goals and then our guys just fed off each other."

Eight players scored for Benilde-St. Margaret’s, including senior middie Chase Mlnarik, who had three. Sophomore goalie Thomas Gilligan made 12 saves and gave up three goals in three quarters.

Senior attackman Sean Keogh and sophomore attackman Eric Fong each had two goals for Wayzata, which finshed the season 11-7.
