AS: Ben Piacquadio Leads SD LaxDawgs Past Oregon Rhino, 9-2

July 25th, 2009

Attackman Ben Piacquadio claims he has a weak right hand, but it would be impossible to know it from watching him shoot the rock Friday afternoon.

Piacquadio scored a game-high five goals to lead San Diego LaxDawgs Royal to a decisive 9-2 victory over the Oregon Rhino Rockets in an Adrenaline Shootout boys high school division first-round game at Sonoma State University.

Attackman Michael Weller added a pair of goals, attackman Christian Ballow dished two assists and middie Luke Barmeyer had a goal and an assist to help the LaxDawgs (3-1) move into a tie for second place with the Rhino Rockets (3-1) in the seven-team Adrenaline Division.

Middie Taylor Chase also scored a goal for San Diego, which trails the first-place Saskatoon Scorpions (4-0) by one game.

In defeat, middie Joe Graham had two assists and middie Ryan Hearon and attackman Kyle McClintic each scored once for Oregon, which also trails the Scorpions by one game.

Piacquadio, a lefty, put on a shooting clinic with both hands, scoring on shots from tight angles near the crease and on rips from the outside. He scored to give the LaxDawgs a 3-0 and 5-1 lead in the first half before adding three more over the final 25 minutes.

“I just try and practice a lot with both hands,” Piacquadio said. “I’ve had a weak right hand for a long time, so it just takes practice. It just goes back to hitting the wall and doing all the things kids don’t like to do. I know it’s annoying, but it’s helped me a ton.”
