NorCAL BOYS: Bellarmine Upsets No. 10 Monte Vista in OT
March 13th, 2010
Junior middie Ryan Le scored the game-winning goal with 1:45 remaining in overtime to give Bellarmine Prep a 12-11 upset victory over No. 10 Danville Monte Vista in a California Interscholastic Federation game Friday afternoon.
Le scored his third of the day from about 10 yards on an isolation dodge to lift the Bells (4-1) to one of their most significant regular-season victories in program history.
Senior attackman Patrick McMahon scored a team-high four goals, and junior attackman Kevin Weigand, junior middie Mac Whims, junior attackman Austin Pridham, junior middie Anthony Varni and senior attackman A.J. Von Massenhausen all added single goals for Bellarmine Prep.
Danville Monte Vista (0-1) lost its season opener three days after it thrashed Cardinal Newman by 15 goals in a preseason scrimmage.
Bellarmine Prep led 4-2 at the end of the first quarter and 8-7 at halftime before the Mustangs came back to take a 10-9 lead at the end of the third quarter.
About midway through overtime, Le got possession, dodged to his right and shot low off the left pipe. The ball somehow trickled into the cage, settling off a wild celebration.
Despite the magnitude of the win, however, Bellarmine Prep head coach Brad Lipscomb tried to downplay it.
“I don’t want to make too much of it, honestly,” he said. “I was proud. We talk about playing ‘team tough,’ and I thought today our team finally played team tough.”
