LOU BOYS: Baton Rouge Catholic Tops Ocean Springs, 10-5

February 27th, 2010

Junior attackman Jake Guba scored a game-high three goals to lead Baton Rouge Catholic to a 10-5 victory over Ocean Springs in a Louisiana High School Lacrosse League game Saturday morning.

Senior attackman Gerard Zimmerman and senior middie William McIntyre each added three points on two goals and an assist, and junior middie Tyler Hood scored twice to help Baton Rouge Catholic (3-1) win its second straight.

Junior middie George Troxell had a goal to round out the offense for the Bears.

Defensively, senior goalie Dominic Calato saved seven shots.

In defeat, senior attackman Nick Rocco scored a team-high two goals, and senior attackman Bryce Shepard, senior middie Dewey Braa and Jeremy Frosch all scored once for Ocean Springs (1-3), which has lost two straight.

The game was tied, 3-3, at the end of the third quarter before turning on a three-minute, non-releasable, illegal-stick penalty. Ocean Springs would have started the fourth quarter with a man-up advantage, but because of the illegal-stick penalty, the teams were even-up for about 45 seconds before the Bears had the extra-man advantage for the remainder of the three minutes.

In that first three minutes of the fourth quarter, Baton Rouge Catholic scored four goals to take a 7-3 lead and effectively end it.

“I thought that the first half was a little sluggish,” Zimmerman said. “But in the fourth quarter, when we got that penalty, we turned it up a notch. We really started to play like we knew we could and never looked back.”
