LOU BOYS: Baton Rouge Catholic Edges St. Paul's, 7-6

Baton Rouge Catholic got a late stop to hold off St. Paul’s, 7-6, in the season opener for both teams on Saturday.

St. Paul’s had the ball with three seconds left, but a potential game-tying shot flew wide.

“It was closer than we were comfortable with,” Baton Rouge Catholic Coach Mike Treloar said.

Baton Rouge Catholic got a standout performance from senior goalie Dominic Calato, who stopped 12 shots, and balanced scoring from its offense. Senior Will McIntyre had a pair of goals, and five other players scored one. Jake Guba added a pair of assists.

Drake Arnold led St. Paul’s with three goals, while Jake Dubuc, Zac Campo and J.P. Miebaum added one apiece. Mac Keller and Robert LePere had assists for the Wolves.

The teams went to halftime tied at five, and Baton Rouge Catholic scored in the third and fourth quarters to go up 7-5. St. Paul’s scored with about a minute left to pull within one but could not equalize.

Despite the loss, St. Paul’s play represented a step in the right direction.

“We were happy with the performance of the whole team,” St. Paul’s Coach Louie Dubuc said. “We got a lot of guys in, and everybody did really well. Last year we played Catholic, and I think we lost by double digits. We fought the whole four quarters this time.”

Treloar, meanwhile, said Baton Rouge Catholic has to improve its shooting accuracy and eliminate penalties.

“We’ve just got to clean up our play,” he said.
