LOU BOYS: Austin Mathias Leads Loyola Past C.E. Byrd, 8-5
April 18th, 2010
Junior attackman Austin Mathias scored a game-high four goals to lead Loyola-Shreveport to an 8-5 victory over C.E. Byrd in a Louisiana High School Lacrosse League game Saturday afternoon in Shreveport.
Senior middie Chris Volentine and senior attackman J.T. Terzia each added three points to help the Flyers (10-5) finish the regular season with four straight wins. Volentine scored two goals and added an assist, and Terzia had a goal and two assists.
Freshman attackman Austin Melson scored once to round out the Loyola offense.
In the cage, senior goalie Chris Melson saved 12 shots.
C.E. Byrd (5-5) had its three-game winning streak snapped. The Yellow Jackets will wrap up the regular season Monday against Caddo Magnet.
Loyola, which was once again playing without head coach Mike DeVita, who is in Alaska on business, maintained a small edge throughout. The Flyers led 2-0 at the end of the first quarter, 4-3 at halftime and 5-3 at the end of the third quarter.
Mathias scored with 3:34 remaining in regulation to put the Flyers up 8-4 before C.E. Byrd pulled a goal back in the final minute.
“I thought the team played very hard,” said assistant coach Kevin Crumrine, who will man the sideline when Loyola plays its state quarterfinal. “We’re happy with how the game went, and I’d love to see us build on this as we get into the playoffs.”
