Chaparral vs Chandler
Certainly the most competitive game of the season. Both teams played well despite some intersting mistakes by both.
The game was wide open going into the second half until Andrew Muscara scored two unassisted goals and forced Chaparral to double and triple team him for the remainder of the game. Muscara won ten of the thirteen draws he took and turned seven into fast break opportunities.
Brian LaFlam was outstanding in both halves recording an unofficial 18 saves and turning away several point blank shots.
Several players came up big for Chandler in the second half including Shawn LaFlam, Ausitn Marie and Mike Giffen who score the tieing goal. Then with four seconds left sophomore Daniel Nelson took the ball from behind, came around the left side and scored followed by a tremendous collision with most of Chaparrals defense.
Great game by both teams.
Chandler vs Horizon
After a goal off the first faceoff was waived off due to a hole in the net Andrew Muscara went on to lead Chandler to a 21-8 victory over an athletic but inexperienced Horizon squad. Muscara converted to attack this season scored four "more" in a little more than half the game. Shawn Laflam led all scoreers with seven points 4g 3a, Jonah Woessner 3g 2a had five and Brandon Moranz and Daniel Nelson had four points each.
Chandler showed considerable improvement in shooting accuracy, ground ball play and clearing. Horizon though took advantage of some defensive lapses to score eight goals. Horizon was able to run its offense effectively at times and with a long season in front of them should improve tremendously by the end of the season.
Chandler has to avoid sloppy play on clears and continue to develop its younger players if it wants to challenge Brophy and Chaparral.
Brophy vs Chandler
Brophy looked solid last night leading from start to finish. Brophy was able to keep Chandler's scorers off the board for most of the game and controlled the pace from start to finish.
Chandler will have to improve it's close defense, ground ball play and ability to effectively clear the ball if it wants to challenge for a championship this year. Chandler's goalie had an excellent game and despite the score was able to keep Chandler in the game with some excellent play in the second half.
Moranz and Muscara for Chandler both had many opportunites to shoot but need to focus on improving their accuracy for the team to be successful.
Chandler High School
Chandler had a tune up game to start the season against a spirited Mesa Heat squad. Chandlers attack scored twelve of 16 total goals with Andrew Muscara, converted middie, leading the way with 5, Jonah Woessner 4, Daniel Nelson 2 and Shawn LaFlam 1. Middies Brandon Moranz (2), Cody Trella and Mike Giffen rounded out the scoring.
Mesa showed great hussle in its first Division One game and will undoubltedly improve quickly as they get use to the pace of play.
