SAN DIEGO -- Middie Andrew Hayden won 12-of-15 face-offs and registered two points on a goal and an assist to lead the San Diego Shredderz to a decisive 11-3 victory over Oregon Rhino Elite in both teams opening game at the Adrenaline Challenge.
In an Adrenaline Elite Group 1 game, attackman Timmy Andrews finished with a game-high four points on two goals and two assists, attackman Brendan Gaughan added three points on two goals and one assist and middie Luke Bausback scored twice to help the Shredderz role.
Attackman Tripp Taylor had two points on a goal and an assist, and middie Andrew Bertha, defenseman Eric Soenksen and Pennsylvania-bound defenseman Reid Tudor all had a goal to round out the scoring for San Diego.
In defeat, attackman Michael Marcott scored twice, and middie Seth Goddin had a goal for Oregon (0-1).
The Shredderz dominated possession from the start thanks in large part to Hayden, who won many of his face-offs cleanly.
“Every since the first clamp, I just had the winning mindset,” Hayden said. “And it kept going. I was strutting at the beginning of the game, wanting to win the face-offs.”
San Diego suffered from erratic shooting early, and as a result Oregon kept it close. The game was tied, 2-2 after Goddin scored a man-up goal with nine minutes remaining in the half on a wicked shot from 15 yards. But it was all Shredderz from there.
Soenksen scored after a long run to give San Diego a 3-2 lead, and it sparked an eight-goal run. By the time Tudor scored with 13 minutes to play, the Shredderz led 10-2.
