AS: Alex Williams Leads All Idaho Past SoCal 101 Starz, 10-8

July 17th, 2009

Chapman-bound middie Alex Williams scored four goals and added an assist to lead All Idaho Lacrosse to a 10-8 victory over the SoCal 101 Starz in an Adrenaline Shootout, South Swell Division first-round game Friday afternoon.

Williams scored three goals in the first half and added one more during a five-goal, second-half run that proved to be decisive for All Idaho (2-1), which has won two straight.

Attackman Sam Hardison added three points on two goals and an assist, middie Cody Cantrell scored twice and attackman Alex Gregoire and middie Sayre Thomas each finished with a goal to round out the offense for the victors. Through three games, Idaho is tied for fifth place in the 12-team division.

SoCal 101 (1-2) dropped its second straight and is in seventh place.

The game was level, 5-5, a little more than 10 minutes into the second half when Hardison stole a pass and fired it into an empty cage from long distance to put Idaho ahead to stay. That started a five-goal run in which five different Idaho players scored.

Thomas capped the rally when he scored an unassisted goal with about six minutes remaining to make it 10-5.

SoCal 101 fought back, scoring three in the final five minutes. Zachary Garrett, Will Marinelli and Michael Spagnoli all scored to bring the Southern Californians within 10-8 with 2:30 to play. But Idaho regained its composure to secure the win.

“It’s exciting to get two wins,” Williams said. “I wasn’t expecting too much from our team, but we really have come out here and are playing at a higher level. The first game opened our eyes.”
