MEN: Air Force Loses Lead, Game to Pennsylvania, 8-7

March 8th, 2010

For the second straight day, the Air Force men’s lacrosse team let one slip away at the Pioneer Face-Off Classic.

This time, the Falcons blew a four-goal halftime lead and lost, 8-7, to Pennsylvania before a crowd of 1,172 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

Corey Winkoff scored the go-ahead goal for the Quakers (2-2) with 2:51 remaining in regulation, as Penn swept its two games at the ninth-annual event. Winkoff finished with a game-high four points on a goal and three assists.

In defeat, junior middie Zack Carroll scored three goals, junior middie Tristan Newkirk added a pair and senior attackman Ridge Flick finished with a goal and an assist for Air Force (0-3), which has lost three straight to start the season.

Air Force, which led by as many as four and three in the fourth quarter before losing at the buzzer to Lehigh on Saturday, started strong for the second straight day. This time, the Falcons led 5-1 at halftime, but Penn stormed back in the third quarter.

The Quakers scored four straight goals to tie it, 5-5, before the teams traded goals right down to the end. Penn took its first lead of the game, 7-6, off a goal by Will Amling with 3:36 remaining, but Carroll answered to tie it 13 seconds later.

However, Penn responded when Winkoff scored his only goal of the game.
