MEN: Air Force Loses 1-Goal Game for 4th Time This Season
April 18th, 2010
The Air Force men’s lacrosse team just can’t seem to get over the top this season.
On Saturday, the Falcons lost their fourth one-goal game, this time dropping a 4-3 decision to No. 18 Fairfield on a dreary afternoon in Colorado Springs.
Ridge Flick, Jimmy Curran and Vinny Sandtorv scored goals for Air Force (1-10, 0-4 ECAC), but the Falcons lost their seventh straight and are one of two teams that are winless in the conference. Air Force has lost eight games this season by three goals or fewer.
In the cage, Matt Sanders saved 11 shots, but he didn’t get much offensive support.
For Fairfield (8-3, 4-1), Doug Kuring had a goal and an assist, and Joseph Marra saved 13 shots.
Air Force seemed to do everything right but put the ball in the cage. The Falcons outshot Fairfield 36-29, had a 22-20 edge on ground balls and went 7-4 on face-offs. The team just lacked a finishing touch.
The game was tied, 1-1, at the end of the first quarter and 2-2 at halftime before Fairfield scored back-to-back goal to start the second half and take a 4-2 lead.
Sandtorv scored off a feed from Tristan Newkirk with 3:56 remaining in the third quarter to pull Air Force within 4-3, but the teams then finished the afternoon with almost 19 minutes of scoreless lacrosse.
